A HUGE NIGHT OF JAMAICAN SKA & ALL GIRL BAND GREATNESS of ROCKABILLY & SWING. It's time to get dressed up & dust off those dancing shoes!! Special Guest: GATOR QUEEN.
THE SKA VENDORS have been serving up Melbourne’s best slice of offbeat sounds for nearly a decade. With a line up that boasts some of the most experienced ska musicians in Melbourne, The Ska Vendors’ live show is high on energy and very danceable, with the dance floor full of smiling dancers from the very first note!
Formed in Melbourne’s west in late 2003, their devotion to the rhythms of Jamaica is clear. Their CV includes support slots for British two‐tone legends The Beat, The Specials and Bad Manners as well as providing backing for Jamaican legends Owen Gray, Carlos Malcolm, Stranger Cole and Dawn Penn.
The Ska Vendors’ members are also currently involved with the Melbourne Ska Orchestra as well boasting a line up that includes John Holmes (Strange Tenants) and Chris Rogers (Strange Tenants and Chris Wilson), Michael Havir (Skazz and Afro Mandinko) and probably Melbourne’s best blues songstress, Kerri Simpson.
Led by lively Scotsman Steven Montgomery (who led the Melbourne Ska Orchestra on a momentous tour of Chile), The Vendors are strong believers in creating a party atmosphere with plenty of audience participation. A love and respect of the Jamaican sound, with of course, a Melbourne twist, keep The Vendors happy to continue to deliver their own brand of ska, rocksteady and Jamaican rhythm & blues. This is Melbourne Ska!
From The Ronettes to The Ramones and everything else in between … joining the Vendors on the night will be THE REBELLES! The Rebelles are 15 wondrous women serving up a wall of girl group greatness. With punk energy, harmonic panache and a good-bad-but-not-evil glint, The Rebelles have developed a reputation as one band you simply have to see.
Working their hypnotic spell of doo-lang harmonies, The Rebelles infuse two-finger downtown riffs with an uptown swagger. At the heart of The Rebelles’ show is respect for some of rock’s greats – Phil Spector, of course, but also the brilliant song writing of the likes of Goffin and King and Leiber and Stoller, creative geniuses who knew how to break your heart using just a couple of words and even fewer chords.
The Rebelles genuflect in front of these great names in their quest to keep alive the holy music of the likes of the Ronettes, the Shangri-Las, the Chiffons and the Shirelles. Add in a couple of girl group influenced rockers from The Ramones and you get The Rebelles – an all-singin’, all-swingin’ brood of harmonisin’ misfits and heart-breakin’ miscreants hittin’ audiences where it hurts best – right between the heart and the hips!
And because it’s Christmas and The Ska Vendors and The Rebelles love nothing better than hanging out together under the mistletoe, expect some seasonal musical treats under the tree … but only if you promise to be extra bad!
Kicking the night off will be the rocking N’awlins zydeco of Gator Queen, so get there early. Three great bands wishing you a very Melbourne Christmas!
