Peter Foley
Peter Foley, frustrated at the lack of quality music venues south of the river, started staging gigs at his Oakleigh home 4 years ago.
Famous Australian musicians like David Bridie, Stephen Cummings, Rebecca Barnard,Lisa Miller and Dave Graney perfomed on the small stage in Peter’s lounge room.
In mid 2007 Steve Carr from the Oakleigh Bowling Club approached Peter and asked him if he would be interested in presenting some larger scale gigs at the club.
The monster was born.
The gig was instantly popular with music starved local community.
Great musicians from all over Australia and beyond were attracted to play at The OBC. Artists such as Mark Seymour, The Black Sorrows, The Pigram Brothers, Mick Thomas and the Sure Thing, Suzannah Espie, Chris Wilson, Anne McCue and international artists like The Hot Club of Cowtown and Eliza Gilkyson performed there.
The OBC gig was famous for its warm and friendly vibe where artists are treated with respect and actually listened to.
At the end of 2009 the effort involved in building a gig from the ground every week at the bowling club has become too difficult so Peter and his group at Caravan Music decided if the gig was to continue, it must relocate to a venue where the PA equipment, staging etc could be installed and remain set up. The Oakleigh/Carnegie RSL down the road had recently removed its poker machines and was looking to develop a social music culture. It has a lovely old hall that opens out on to a terrific beer garden.
This is now the home of THE CARAVAN MUSIC CLUB.
We will have the ability to present many more gigs at The CARAVAN and develop a genuine music club atmosphere.
