Vieux Farka Toure

Fresh off opening the World Cup and bringing down houses on 4 continents last year, VIEUX FARKA TOURE is poised to become Africa's preeminent axe-man.

Vieux Farka Touré’s career in music would never have happened if his illustrious parent, African blues legend Ali Farka Touré’s, had his way.  Ali felt that the music business was a harsh place to work and preferred that Vieux enlist in the army.  But young Vieux, destined for the stage, honed his skills on the guitar in secret and eventually found a mentor in Toumani Diabate, and his own talents eventually convinced the elder Farka Touré that a second generation of music prowess was inevitable. ... It has been too long since Shane Howard (Goanna) has performed his own show here at the Caravan. We are very pleased to have him back performing songs from his album 'Deeper South' as well as a selection of songs throughout his musical career.

Deeper South is Shane Howard's journey across the wine-dark sea. He takes to the ocean in imagery and philosophy, meditating on life and love in the pitch and roar of the waves, the depth of the currents, the surface tensions of the seemingly becalmed. For there's something of a constant battle on the captain's deck between despairing realism and the power of love. It's an all-acoustic, wooden instruments, affair that marries folk and Celtic genres. ... Continue Reading

Dori Freeman (US)

Breakout Americana artist DORI FREEMAN will make her debut at the Caravan. Dori Freeman has a perfect country voice: languid and pure-toned but with a little Appalachian dust on it. Freeman’s storytelling soaks up the wisdom of more decades than the 25-year-old has been around. Her songs hit you like a train. They are stunningly gorgeous, lyrically rich and so thoughtfully executed. Her lilting vocals shine – at times reminiscent of Emmylou Harris – and are delivered with such an aching, melancholic sincerity that her reflections on love, loss and heartbreak wind up buried deep under your skin.

Dori Freeman has its own unique sound while also drawing from many different genres.  Freeman says the distinct sound of the record, produced by acclaimed singer/musician Teddy Thompson, came about organically.  “We just wanted it to sound genuine,” she says.  “To be current and sincere.” That sincerity is palpable on the album, made up of songs full of longing, wit, and haunting vocals from Freeman, who sings in a seemingly-effortless but layered, sensual way, causing each word—and note—to take flight. ...
